Our work: Fonio and grains

Our purpose is to help African food processors grow. Here is a selection of our work: who supported it, what we did and what changed.

Fonio is a resilient West African grain with strong nutritional value, and a new product for processors who otherwise work only in the mango season. The grain is hard to thresh, dehull and clean, and affordable equipment has been the main bottleneck. In Burkina DryMore we narrowed six candidate crops to three viable off-season products: fonio, ginger and hibiscus. We supported processing pilots, quality testing and buyer engagement, and developed prototype fonio equipment that can be repaired locally. Two containers of fonio were shipped to the Netherlands, and 474 smallholder farmers were trained in the programme's first year.
