What we do / Value chain development

Value chain development

We map a value chain from farm to buyer, find where it loses money and quality, and lead the work to repair it. We work for funders and programmes, and with the businesses and public bodies in the chain.

What we do

We follow the product from farmers through traders and processors to the buyer, and look at volumes, costs, quality and who earns what. Then we help make the changes: we coach the businesses, train their staff, bring buyers and suppliers together, and work with regulators on the rules that hold the chain back.

A processor can only grow if the chain behind it supplies enough, at the right quality and price. You receive a map of the chain, a ranked list of what holds it back, and a plan with named owners. Our team works alongside yours while it is carried out.

Where we have done this

  • Eritrea: we mapped the dairy chain and wrote the manual that trains milk collection centres to run as cooperatives.
  • Angola: we brought 80+ stakeholders together in Benguela and built a roadmap for a dried fruit sector on the Lobito Corridor.
  • Burkina Faso: horticulture coaching and a quality plan for compost producers.
  • GIZ: business models for young people, in four countries.
  • Malawi: fish farming studied across eight districts, with a focus on women.
