What we do / Responsible business

Responsible business

We help companies improve how they treat their workers and the environment, in steps they can afford. We work with the companies themselves, and for the donors, programmes, buyers and lenders that support them.

Our approach

  1. 1

    Identify risks and opportunities

We visit the site, talk to managers and hold focus groups with workers. We look at contracts, pay, health and safety, the place of women and young people, and the company's effect on waste, energy and water.

  2. 2

    Agree a plan

We agree a plan with the company, with steps it can afford.

  3. 3

    Carry it out

We help the company carry the plan out.

Due diligence

Assessments for funders and investors: we assess a company in depth before money is committed.

Our work

CBI dried mango, Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire. We piloted solutions to improve working conditions in dried mango companies:

  • A two-shift system
  • Shorter working days
  • Leave days
  • Targets for each team on each shift
  • Air conditioning for worker comfort
  • Smaller shifts, so people have more room to work comfortably

None of the companies reached the top score for decent work in phase 1, which is why phase 2, running to 2030, works on conditions for seasonal women workers.
