Commercial innovation

We study markets and value chains to find new opportunities for processors, model each one and help the company carry it out. Sometimes the answer is a technology option, and we compare the choices.

What we do

We look for where a processor could earn more: a new product, a new buyer, a new season. We build the business model, with costs, margins, break-even and the finance needed. Then we coach the company, train its team and use the model as its working plan.

You receive a shortlist of opportunities ranked by what they would earn, a business model for each one worth pursuing, and a coach alongside you as it is put into practice. An idea that does not pay is dropped early, before the money is spent.

Where we have done this

  • GIZ rural youth employment: a five-step method to find opportunities for young people, model them and support their start-up. It was tested in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi and Mozambique. For young people, the opportunity is a job or a business that supplies a growing processor.
  • Burkina Faso, DryMore: dried mango processors added fonio, ginger and hibiscus so their factories can work all year, and 2 containers of fonio have shipped to the Netherlands.
