Rice Miller Business Academy – West AfricaBuilding Competitive Rice Mills Across West Africa
Across West Africa, rice milling is central to food security—but many mills struggle with weak margins, inconsistent quality, and limited market differentiation. Through the GIZ MOVE project, Sense designed and implemented the Rice Miller Business Training (RMBT) Academy and tailored coaching support to help mills operate as competitive agri-processing businesses, not just production units.

Why It Matters
What We Did
- Designed and delivered the Rice Miller Business Training (RMBT) Academy, a four-course programme covering marketing, milling operations, finance, and farmer services.
- Provided longitudinal Business Development Services (BDS) coaching, combining baseline mill audits, priority-based coaching, and follow-up support.
- Built and managed a regional coach network, training and backstopping 28 local coaches across Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Côte d’Ivoire.
- Embedded delivery through Sense’s Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring consistent quality, documentation, and scale.
Results
- 42 rice mills engaged across four countries through training, audits, and tailored coaching support.
- 20 mills supported in Phase I, with Phase II scaling delivery through multiple training and coaching rounds.
- Mills shifted from ad-hoc decision-making to structured business planning, with clearer priorities across marketing, operations, finance, and farmer engagement.
- A replicable academy-plus-coaching model was institutionalised within GIZ MOVE, enabling ongoing rollout beyond initial cohorts.
Why It Matters
- Scaling agri-processing in Africa depends on strong mid-stream enterprises that can compete with imports and serve local markets reliably.
- Rice mills are anchors for farmer livelihoods—better-run mills mean stronger supply chains and more stable demand for paddy.
- Sense’s academy model moves beyond short trainings to sustained performance improvement, unlocking productivity, margins, and jobs.
- The RMBT approach provides a blueprint for upgrading staple crop processors across African markets at scale.
